Description

Actuarial Analyst IV

The Actuarial Research group comprises an entrepreneurial, project-oriented team that seeks to provide innovative solutions to pricing, underwriting and enterprise risk management. This position reports to the Manager of Actuarial Research.

Primary responsibilities include assisting in the development of class plans and underwriting models, lead analysis, risk assessment, customer attrition/retention modeling, and price optimization. This position does not directly supervise others, and works under general to limited supervision.

Scope of Responsibilities:

Work with the project team to translate business needs to data elements and creatively source, extract, match, and modify data to enable modeling efforts.

Develop and apply insightful data transformations and derivations to support downstream modeling initiatives.

Employ appropriate sampling and dimensionality reduction techniques to handle data volume and size.

Develop multiple models to address the business problem and validate results.

Communicate progress and results effectively to business units throughout the various stages of the project.

Provide technical leadership and mentoring for other members in the team and play a key role in driving future direction and strategy of the group.

Develop relationships with internal business customers.

Develop rating structures for Personal Auto and Homeowners using state of the art statistical/actuarial methods.

Works in an office environment sitting at a desk, table or computer workstation for long periods of time. May travel by car, plane or other forms of transportation to attend business functions. Approximately 50-80 percent of time spent on the job involves the use of a personal computer.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
* BA/BS in finance, economics, business administration, computer science, mathematics, statistics or related field and 5-7 years post bachelor experience in statistical analysis, mathematical modeling or actuarial experience; or advanced degree in finance, economics, business administration, computer science, mathematics, statistics or related field and 3 years experience in statistical analysis, mathematical modeling or actuarial experience
* Actuarial concepts including personal lines class plan development.
* Strong understanding of insurance related modeling and data
* Extensive experience with advanced statistical methods including GLMs, GAMs, decision trees, neural networks.
* Must be able to conduct simulation and stochastic modeling of insurance problems.
* Advanced skills in Excel, Word, Access, SAS and SQL.
* Must display interpersonal skills and ability to understand and work effectively with coworkers and other departments in a professional and tactful manner.
* Must be able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
* Must have a proven ability to analyze information and draw accurate conclusions.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

* 5-6 actuarial exams
* Advanced Degree in Statistics or Actuarial Science
* Intuitive understanding of insurance data and the inherent correlations that exist.
* Knowledge of statistical techniques including sampling theory, regression, confidence intervals, Monte Carlo simulations, and stochastic modeling.
* Project Management - demonstrated ability to manage projects from beginning to end. Demonstrated leadership ability/potential.
* Experience in price optimization in insurance industry
