Position Summary

The Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology is seeking a highly motivated professional with excellent accounting skills. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter with a strong accounting background. The selected candidate will perform advanced accounting duties in the areas of a) unrestricted financial reports and projections; b) individual grant budget reports and projections in keeping with funding source regulations and departmental policy; c) bi-annual and annual periodic departmental budget reports and projections.
The accountant will monitor department revenue and expenses in both restricted and unrestricted indices (70 indices combined). Will reconcile, balance and maintain spreadsheets and files for both unrestricted and restricted indices using finance, accounting budgeting and cost control procedures. Will construct spreadsheet applications and prepare as well as assist Department Administrator, using standard and fund accounting principles, methods and applications on automated spreadsheets and will review for mathematical correctness and compliance. Will ensure expenditure control, analysis, reconcile, balance and ensure compliance with funding and reporting requirements as it pertains to University policy, state and federal funding requirements and standard accounting. Will review expenditure, personnel and/or purchasing documents for availability of funding, mathematical correctness, and compliance with university policy and state and federal funding requirements. Will process as originator all PHAREDS, and EPAFS.
Will also order lab supplies and reconciles in Chrome and in monthly spreadsheets. Will prepare and process budget, Internal budget revisions, Journal Vouchers, Award Budget Sheets. Will interact with department faculty/staff/post docs/students regarding financial policies and procedures; serve as liaison with department representatives, vendors, funding sources representatives, in the resolution of financial issues. Will meet with the Department Administrator and faculty on a monthly basis to review with faculty their spending on their indices. Will assist in Client department problem solving and planning and in the execution of goals and objectives of department and Chairman and Department Administrator. Will participate in in-depth meeting and will assist the Department Administrator in preparation of the mid- year and annual budgets.

  • If this position is assigned to the Athletics Department, either administratively or functionally, compliance with all NCAA rules and regulations is required.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and successful completion of at least 9 credit hours of university-level accounting through intermediate accounting; no previous experience required.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with Banner Finance or similar integrated system is highly desirable but not required.
Experience with professional accounting in a post-secondary educational environment or in a large private or public sector environment
Preparing and reviewing financial documents, statements analyses and reports
Working in a team- oriented environment
