Position Summary

The Contract and Grant Accounting department has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Accountant 3. Contract & Grant Accounting (CGA) is under the direction of the Financial Services Division (FSD) and also reports to the Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR). Our mission is to provide the University of New Mexico’s research community with professional expertise and quality customer service in the management of externally sponsored funding. We also strive to provide guidance and support to ensure compliance with UNM policy, state law, federal regulations and agency terms and conditions of funding.

The ideal candidate for this position will have experience working with automated financial systems and reporting software. This position requires excellent analytical skills along with critical thinking, resourcefulness, communication, and problem-solving skills. This individual must have the ability to compile, analyze, interpret, and present complex financial reports, statements, and/or projections. In addition, Knowledge of the principles, processes, and standards for financial analysis and reporting as related to a research institution are required.

Responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to: pulling reports and backup documentation for various federal, state, and other external audits; helping with testing requirements for our various financial systems; manage and oversee our subaward desk review process; monitoring restricted funds through budget-to-actual reports, burn rate reports, executive reports, and any other required reports; reconciling our Letter of Credit (LOC) draw accounts; investigate inventory dispositions on assets acquired with external funds; developing reports from various data sources; interpreting and analyzing reports and projections; maintaining internal controls; investigation and resolution of general accounting issues; and other special projects as assigned. In addition, you will be responsible for interpreting and communicating compliance requirements from multiple funding sources. You will also be required to meet regularly with department leadership and others to present reports and project status updates.

Conditions of Employment
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and successful completion of at least 15 credit hours of university-level accounting through intermediate accounting; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong analytical skills, including the ability to create, compile, analyze, interpret, and present complex financial reports.
  • Using financial accounting systems; added benefit for SCT Banner, MyReports experience
  • Experience preparing and reviewing financial documents, including financial statements
  • Proficient in reconciling, analyzing, and reporting
  • Ability to work under pressure and prioritize work assignments
  • Ability to solve problems and make decisions independently
  • Experience with project management
  • CPA/CMA Certification or MBA/MA/MS in Accounting or Finance
